PRE-COMPETITION INSTRUCTIONS:

 

  • You must pre-register online BEFORE the event. No day-of registrations will be accepted.
  • You can register online until Friday, April 27th Tuesday, May 2nd, 2018 at:  http://bit.ly/mathzilla5
  • The Speed Test will be administered the week prior to the competition. Contact your school's site coordinator if you have any questions. The Mathzilla site coordinators / coaches are:

COMPETITION NIGHT INSTRUCTIONS:

  • On the night of the competition, all you need to bring is yourself! Pencils and scratch paper will be provided.
  • No smartphones, calculators, graph paper, rulers, compasses, slide rules, computers or any other mathematical aid will be allowed.
  • On Thursday, May 03rd, please register in front of the PCR multi-purpose room (MPR) at the registration table and await instructions.
  • The schedule of events for Mathzilla! 5.0 is:

  • The Mathzilla competition consists of an Individual Competition as well as Team Competition, the rules of which are each described below.

AWARDS:

Medals will be awarded to the Top 3 Individuals in each grade (4th, 5th and 6th) for Speed Test and Problem Solving, as well as trophies to the top 3 students overall in the Individual Competition regardless of grade.

New for this year -- trophies will be awarded to each top grade-level team on the Team Competition. And finally, th Mathzilla! Team Trophy will be awarded to the winning school based on the following composite score:

  • Average of top 10 individual Speed Test scores for that school (weighted 1/3rd)
  • Average of top 10 individual Problem Solving scores for that school (weighted 1/3rd)
  • Sum of three grade-level team scores from Team Round normalized to 100 points (weighted 1/3rd)

Separate awards will be given out for winners of the Rubik's Cube Contest.

 

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION:

The Individual Competition consists of two parts:

Part 1 - Speed Test  – Administered at each school site prior to Mathzilla! The Speed Test consists of a 15-minute timed, written test with 85 problems total in three different sections. Each question in sections 1 and 2 is worth 1 point. Each question in section 3 is worth 2 points for a maximum possible score of 100 points.

Part 2 - Problem Solving Test – Administered the night of the event at 5:20pm. The Problem Solving Test consists of a 30-minute timed, written test with 10 Math Olympiad-type problems. Each question is worth 10 points for a maximum possible score of 100 points.

Competitors need not complete the Speed Test in order to take the Problem Solving Test on the night of Mathzilla. The total Individual Score will be calculated only to determine the top 3 individuals, regardless of grade, in the competition.

 

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION RULES:

  • Competitors must be enrolled as full-time students in one of the LCUSD elementary schools.
  • Competitors must work by themselves during the Speed and Problem Solving tests.
  • Competitors may use only the pencil and scratch paper provided. No calculators, smartphones, laptops, tablets, or other electronic device, rulers, compasses, abacuses, slide rules, graph paper, or other aid may be used.
  • The Speed Test and Problem Solving Tests will be administered in classrooms and proctored by Mathzilla officials.
  • Students will be taken to classrooms on the PCR campus from the Cafeteria during Mathzilla 5.0 to take the Problem Solving exam, and will return to the cafeteria when done.
  • Mathzilla proctors will provide other specific instructions before administering the tests.
  • Mathzilla proctors may not assist students on specific test questions in any way during the exam.
  • Tests will be graded by Mathzilla staff, and students will only be told their final scores. Graded tests will not be returned to competitors.


TEAM COMPETITION:

The Team Competition will consist of a 20-minute Math Olympiad-type relay event conducted the night of Mathzilla at approximately 6:30pm. Each participating school will field three teams of four students per team, one team each for grades 4, 5 and 6. Each team must work independently to solve Math Olympiad-style problems in a specific order. Teams are awarded points for answering each question correctly: 5 points for the first attempt, 3 for the second and 2 for the third attempt. There are no points awarded after the third attempt to solve a problem. There will be no time bonus points. Points are awarded for each question as follows:

Answer Question Correctly:

1st attempt 5 pts
2nd attempt 3 pts
3rd attempt 2 pts


When a team answers a question correctly or fails to answer a question after the third attempt, it will be given the next question. Teams will continue to answer questions until all questions are exhausted or until 20 minutes elapses.

TEAM RELAY COMPETITION RULES:

  • Each school will field three teams, one each of 4th grade, 5th grade and 6th grade students.
  • Each team may have a maximum four students per team.
  • A student may be a member of only one team.
  • All team competitors must otherwise have competed in at least one part of the Individual Competition and be eligible for the Mathzilla competition.
  • Teams must work independently. Teams may not provide assistance to other teams and spectators may not assist teams.
  • Each school will determine its own criteria for selecting its teams.
  • Each team will select a team runner, who will be responsible for retrieving question cards from the judge's table, as well as submitting answers to the judge's table.
  • Questions will be provided, one at a time, in writing on question sheets.
  • Teams may use only the pencil and scratch paper provided. No calculators, smartphones, laptops, tablets, or other electronic device, rulers, compasses, slide rules, abacuses, graph paper, or other aid may be used.
  • The whole team should work cooperatively to solve the question. Once the members feel certain they have a correct answer, the runner should write down the answer on the question sheet and take it to the judge's table for review.
  • A team will be awarded 5 points for answering a question correctly on the first attempt, 3 points for answering the question correctly on the second attempt, and 2 points on the third attempt. Zero points are recorded after the third failed attempt.
  • There are no time bonus points.
  • Once a team has answered a question correctly, it will be given the next question. Teams may not work on more than one question at a time.
  • A team's final score is calculated as the sum of its accumulated points from all questions answered during the Team Relay round.
  • The Team Relay round will last 20 minutes in duration.
  • Only questions that have been answered in writing and placed on the judges' tables within the announced 20 minute limit will be graded by judges. Any answer sheet placed on the judges' table AFTER time expires will not be judged.

 

RUBIK'S CUBE CONTEST RULES:

During the intermission between the Individual and Team competitions, there will be a break while the Problem Solving Tests are graded. During this time competitors will be offered pizza and drink. In addition, a Rubik's Cube Contest will be held. The rules for the Rubik's Cube Contest are as follows:

  • Only students pre-registered for the Mathzilla 5.0 competition are eligible to compete in the Rubik's Cube Contest.
  • Participation in the Rubik's Cube Contest is voluntary.
  • Students may participate in only one preliminary round.
  • Rubik's Cube Contest participants will solve a pre-scrambled 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube in the fastest time, also known as a Speed Solve.
  • The contest will consist of three preliminary rounds, one for each grade (4th and below, 5th, and 6th)  where any student from that grade can compete. The three fastest competitors from each grade will move on to a final round.
  • Rubik's cubes will be provided by the organizers. CONTESTANTS MAY NOT USE THEIR OWN CUBES!!!
  • Cubes will be scrambled before each round by volunteer scramblers according to Article 4: "Scrambles" of the World Cube Association (WCA) rules specified here:
  • Competitors must not see the puzzle cube until the inspection phase starts. Puzzle cubes will be covered before each round begins.
  • Competitors for a round will be seated at a table upon which is placed a pre-scrambled cube that is covered.
  • Each preliminary and final round will consist of two phases:
  1. Inspection Phase: Each competitor will be allotted 15 seconds to inspect the cube before beginning their solve. When the beginning of the inspection phase is announced, competitors are allowed to remove the cover from the cube, pick up and inspect the cube, but may not apply moves during the inspection. At the end of the inspection phase, the competitor places the cube down on the table in any orientation and places their hands palms down at the front edge of the table. Competitors are not allowed to communicate with anyone other than the judge during the Inspection Phase.
  2. Solve Phase: Maximum time of 5 minutes for each round. Each competitor prepares for the solve by placing fingers down on the front edge of the table away from the cube. Competitors must have no physical contact with the cube until "YOU MAY BEGIN" is announced by the timer. Time begins when the timer announces "YOU MAY BEGIN!" Competitors then work as fast as possible to complete the solve of their cube. The competitor stops the solve by releasing the puzzle, placing both hands flat on the table surface, and standing up from their chair. A judge will inspect the completed puzzle and will acknowledge when a competitor finishes the solve and write down the elapsed time of their solve on their score sheet. While solving the puzzle, the competitor must not communicate with anyone other than the judge.
  • Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each grade in the final round.
